Listen to Jesus

Mark 9:2-10:

Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son.  Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

One of the core tenets of our Faith is to listen to the Lord.  It is the first step in a process that typically goes, “listen, trust, obey”.  If we can’t hear the Word of the Lord, how can we ever truly know Who He is?  If we don’t trust the Word of the Lord, how can we ever grow in Faith?  And, if we don’t obey the Word of the Lord, how can we ever expect His Graces and Mercy?  In the Transfiguration of Jesus in the Gospel, there were a lot of things taking place in a very cosmic sort of way.  The experience was so overwhelming that Peter, John, and James were terrified; God definitely had their full attention.  But sometimes “terrified” is the perfect place for the Holy Trinity to get our attention, too.  If things in the world look terrifying to us today, perhaps that’s just another way that God gets us focused on Him and His Son, Jesus.  If we simply give Jesus our full attention and “Listen to Him”, we can grow in Faith to one day enjoy His Eternal Graces and Mercy.
