Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
This question has puzzled millions for almost 2,000 years, but within the correct answer lies the “Key” that unlocks Eternity. In the Gospel, Peter answers this question from Jesus with that “Key” (correct) answer. He replies with, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And, then, Jesus “unlocks” the Mystery of what happens when we actually Believe that Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus will build a Church upon a Believer’s “rock” of Faith that evil will never be able to win against. A Believer is given the “keys” to Heaven and the Holy Spirit enters into our Souls to help Guide us on the rest of our earthly journeys. A simple “yes” to Jesus turns into the most Incredible Gift that we could ever be offered – Eternity. Death cannot prevail against Eternity – but, it can prevail against us if we don’t Believe and answer this question the way that Peter did. Each of us is Called to be a Church (a Light) for Jesus – within our homes, Churches, jobs, communities, schools, governments, etc. Being a “Light” in this world is a full-time job, for sure. And, accepting Jesus as our Lord means everything has changed – and, so have we. If we haven’t changed in Him, we might need to go back to the start and ask ourselves again, “Who is Jesus?” By honestly-seeking the Truth to that answer, God will Bless us Eternally. He’s guaranteed (Promised) to help us to find Him and then to Bless us once we do.
