Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed to be cured. As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve approached him and said, “Dismiss the crowd so that they can go to the surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.” He said to them, “Give them some food yourselves.” They replied, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy food for all these people.” Now the men there numbered about five thousand. Then he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty.” They did so and made them all sit down. Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.
Have you ever noticed all of the numbers in the Bible? 1, 3, 7, 12, 33, 40, 70, etc. Many of which are repeated again and again. There is even an entire Book of the Bible named for “Numbers”; the name coming from two censuses taken of the Israelites. While our earthly math can be very structured (e.g. sine, cosine, tangent, algorithms, 3.14 (Pi), etc.), God’s Math is something entirely Different at times and not something that mere mortals can entirely comprehend. In the Gospel of the 5 loaves and 2 fish, Jesus uses His Resurrection Power to amplify the meal feeding over 5,000 people and finishing with 12 baskets of left-overs. You see, Jesus and God leverage their Power via the Holy Spirit to do things that can only be described as Miracles. But, here’s the catch for us. While we don’t entirely understand the math, we should understand that, now that Jesus has Risen from the grave and we have taken Him into our hearts, we have that same Resurrection Power living inside of us. We can move mountains if we would only just Believe – Jesus tells us so. In fact, He told us that more than once to reinforce it (Mark 11:23 & Matthew 17:20). We get Blessed in this world to see people who Believe in the Power of God living inside of them – just think of Captain Sully landing a plane safely on the Hudson River, Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, Roger Bannister running a sub 4-minute mile, or a Mother overturning a burning car to save her Child. We are all walking Miracles of God empowered by the Holy Spirit to do incredible things and uniquely change the world. All of us are capable of so much more than we could ever fathom while thinking about it in our earthly flesh and minds. But, with the Faith of a Child and God in our Soul, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26) – and, that’s God’s math in action!
