How Does That Work?

Mark 4:26-34

Jesus said to the crowds: “This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.” He said, “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.” With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it. Without parables he did not speak to them, but to his own disciples he explained everything in private.

As an engineer, I love learning about how things work. I’m fascinated by the intricacies and simplicities of any type of design.  As a former Automotive professional, I am in awe that an automobile can even run at all.  With all of the designs, systems, and related tolerances stacking-up upon each other, it’s just incredible that a car or truck can run at all.  Did you know that there is over a mile of electrical wire in most automobiles on the road today?  I know a lot of doctors who will talk to you with similar perspectives on the human body.  It’s just amazing that our body functions the way that it does.  Cosmologists have a similar perspective on the universe.  In Lee Strobel’s book, “The Case for a Creator”, Lee interviews a scientist who shares that the gravity on earth is dialed-in so precisely that if it waivered even one (1) inch on a ruler that went from one side of the universe to the other, our human bodies would either implode or break-apart.  At the end of the day, all human study gets to a point where you can’t explain your core area of expertise without talking about the mystery of God.  Even Charles Darwin (who was a Christian) said about his theory of evolution that it was only a “theory” based on the data that the world had at that time and that, if and when new data was found to the contrary of his theory, then his theory would be incorrect.  Our Infinite God of the universe is just too big for us to comprehend entirely in this world.  But, like watching a storm roll across the ocean in a state of awe and wonder at the beauty of how it all came together, we are to trust that He is ultimately in control – even if we don’t have all of the answers.  It’s kind of like trusting that your car will run, that your heart will beat, or that the moon and stars are all around us all of the time.  Even if you can’t see your engine components working together, your heart and brain talking to each other, or the universe expanding, you should trust that God is in control of it all and you don’t have to have all of the answers to Believe.
