Kingdom Come

Mark 1:12-15

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

There’s a great scene in the movie, Wyatt Earp, when Kevin Costner (playing Wyatt) enters Dodge City and lets off a shotgun blast sharing that, “It all ends now”.  The Marshall was now back in-town and things were going to change substantially and immediately.  It wasn’t so different when Jesus “moseyed-back-into” Galilee after His time in the desert.  And, like in the time of Marshall Earp, things had gotten a bit out of hand in Israel.  They were murdering Prophets and caught-up in themselves.  Like in the Babylonian exile, Jerusalem had fallen yet again, but this time to the Romans.  Jesus was offering them a better Way – a Way that nobody can ever take away from them even if the Romans took their very lives.  Law and order had returned to the Holy Land in the form of the Perfect Sacrifice and things would never be the same again.  The Answer is very simple, but quite hard to live out.  “Repent, and believe in the gospel.”  Sounds easy enough, but repenting and believing are not static verbs that we do once and never repeat again.  These are Eternal Skills that we need to develop.  One pull-up on a bar might be easy for some.  But, our Faith is a Muscle that must be trained and conditioned with our Holy Father through His Holy Spirit.  And, just like when you don’t feel like going to the gym on a given day and you muster-up the courage to go, you start to form some pretty strong muscles and good habits.  Wyatt Earp has already come into our Spiritual Lives in the form of Jesus and word has it that He’s coming back again.  Mind His shotgun now.
